Aberdeen has a proud and global reputation as the oil and gas capital of Europe, but this didn’t happen overnight. It took a great deal of hard work, knowledge sharing and the creation of a world-class supply chain to ensure that this region became a true international oil and gas cluster. One that was ready to capitalise on the vast opportunities that the discovery of first oil presented.
At its essence, this is exactly the same approach we must take to ensure we fully realise the opportunities that energy transition will bring.
This is precisely why ETZ Ltd was established – a private-sector-led and not-for-profit company with a clear ambition to reposition the North East of Scotland as a globally recognised integrated energy cluster focused on the delivery of net zero.
The scale of opportunity before us is huge. The majority of Scotwind licenses, the world’s largest commercial offshore wind leasing round, are within 100 nautical miles of Aberdeen, and the vast hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) capability is evidence of a region undergoing a remarkable transformation.
The delivery of a successful energy transition will take investment in strategic infrastructure, technology innovation, supply chain development and skills – and that’s exactly what ETZ Ltd has been set up to do. ETZ Ltd's experienced team will utilise long-established connections across the globe, share knowledge and expertise, and create an incubation and collaboration space that delivers the skills that ensure long-term sustainable employment. ETZ Ltd's vision is to do this with partners – to collaborate – to take a strategic view on what’s required.
The key focus of ETZ Ltd is on the development of a unique 40-hectare Energy Transition Zone (ETZ) adjacent to the brand new £400 million deep-water and non-tidal Aberdeen South Harbour, one of the largest marine projects in the UK. It will meet a crucial requirement of potential investors needing proximity to the quayside given the essential requirement to transport components, materials and supplies from onshore to offshore and vice versa.
Underpinning all of this activity is the importance of our Oil & Gas sector. As it matures, we must draw upon 50 years’ experience in a world-class industry – the infrastructure, people, technology, supply chain capability and financial capital – in order to succeed in new energies.
The region is uniquely positioned to be at the very forefront of the transition to new energies and cement its position as the net zero energy capital of Europe.Find out more about ETZ Ltd and the Energy Transition Zone
